Held annually since 1968 by the Institution of Structural Engineers, the Structural Awards was intended to reward the structural design of the world’s infrastructures and construction projects and select the extraordinary projects that give an innovative, esthetic, sustainable, and valuable expression.

The winners were chosen from a shortlist of 49 pioneering global projects in 12 categories for the 2019 Structural Awards. The Award for Tall or Slender Structures of the 2019 Structural Awards went to the CITIC Tower after nearly six-month review.

With a height of 528 meters, the CITIC Tower is the tallest building of Beijing and the world’s first high-rise building that has the 8-degree seismic fortification intensity and a main structure standing over 500 meters. According to the review comments from the out-of-codes structure experts, the overall structure and components of the CITIC Tower totally adopt the performance-based design, and different performance indexes are set up for the different types of components. More performance-based design requirement is put forward for the critical lateral force resisting components that they should remain elastic under the moderate earthquake and never yield under the severe earthquake.

The winning of the Structural Awards by the CITIC Tower once again proves the strength and quality of the project in structure innovation.
